Response to "Equal Marriage Rights" Resolution of UCC

The statement below is part of our response to the resolution passed by the General Synod of the United Church of Christ during the first week of July, 2005.

July 4, 2005, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ approved a resolution "In Support of Equal Marriage Rights for All."  The Blair Congregational United Church of Christ does not support this resolution.  Our pastor and our Church Council will not adopt Wedding Policies that sanction same-sex marriages.

We applaud the resolution's concern for compassionate human love and rejection of hostile or hateful rhetoric against gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender persons.  But we believe that our culture and our religious heritage view homosexual relationships as aberrations that should not be encouraged.  (See e.g. Genesis 19; Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13; or 1 Corinthians 6:9)  Therefore we cannot support calls to legalize same-sex marriages.

Please understand, however, that all persons, regardless of sexual orientation are welcome to worship services and other activities of our church.
